First Details on Supernatural Spin-off

Entertainment Weekly and the Chicago Tribune have revealed some new information on the long-rumored Supernatural spin-off series. The series, known as Tribes, will be piloted through episode 20 of the current season of Supernatural. The Chicago-set series will "explore the clashing monster and human characters" and "have main characters who are both human and monsters" (Carver).

There's no news yet on casting, however, according to BuddyTV, the show will be written by Andrew Dabb and directed by Robert Singer.

Doctor Who Series 8 DVD/Blu-ray for Sale

The BBC have made the DVD and Blu-ray sets of series 8 available for sale on Amazon UK. British fans can pre-order the DVD for £36.75 and the Blu-ray for £39.75. Due to the way Amazon pre-orders work, if the price changes between now and the release date, fans will get the lowest price. I would advise British fans to pre-order now, in case the price goes up and stays up. You can always cancel before the ship date and be charged nothing.

Note that no details about series 8 have been provided, except by the time travelers leaving reviews.

Series 8 Filming, Day 6

More filming took place today, this time at Victoria Place, Newport. It's the same place they filmed the final scenes of The Waters of Mars (in case it looks familiar). Peter and Jenna were not on set, but there was a secret actor whose identity was being kept hidden from the crowd.

Sharp Teeth Review

Dean sure has some pretty serious guilt issues. He seems to think everything is his fault. First he blamed himself for Kevin's death, now he's blaming himself for Garth becoming a werewolf. I think he just doesn't want to blame his friends and family for anything, so he simply puts all the blame on himself. Some day, he has to learn that not everything bad is his fault.

We got to see more of the Winchester codependency issue today. Sam and Dean were apart for only one episode this time. They've spent years apart from each, put only when they thought the other was dead. Anytime they know the other is alive, they end up hunting together. Mind you, they're a force to be reckoned with when hunting together, but they need somebody else in their lives. What really needs to happen is for one of them to get a serious girlfriend and choose her over hunting. Either that, or the girlfriend is a hunter and she hunts with one of them and the other eventually learns to do his own thing.

One problem I noticed with this whole Ragnarok thing is that Odin is already dead. They said in the episode that the werewolf guy is supposed to kill Odin, but Lucifer already did that. Way back in season 5, Lucifer killed a bunch of pagan gods at some hotel where they were having a conference. Apparently this church didn't get that message, and decided to go through with the apocalypse anyway. Either that, or they found out and decided to create their own version of Ragnarok.

I still find it hard to believe that all these cops don't recognize the brothers. I know they're presumed dead, but with all the cops they talk to in each episode, surely one of them must remember them from their previous media attention. They have a known MO of impersonating cops, which coupled with the Impala, is a dead giveaway. I think this is one of the issues that the writer just ignore for the sake of helping the plot along. If the Winchesters were recognized by every cop, it'd seriously screw with the way they operate. The writers would have to come up with some new ploy for the brothers to get information, so rather than do that, they just ignore the issue.

12th Doctor's Costume Revealed!

The BBC have revealed the costume that Peter Capaldi will wear in his time as the 12th Doctor.
The Doctor has a new look as Peter Capaldi’s era officially begins. In a picture released today by the BBC, Capaldi can be seen in the costume that will define his time as the Twelfth Time Lord in one of TV’s biggest roles. Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Dr. Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden.

Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi said: “He's woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.”  While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over - Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!”

Filming for episode one of series 8 began earlier this month, after 10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first much-anticipated glimpse of Capaldi’s Doctor Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, commented: "Peter Capaldi's Doctor is officially recorded in history today with the unveiling of his new costume. It's sharp, smart and stylish - The Twelfth Time Lord means business."

Proposal for Series 8 and Beyond

Here are a few things I would like in the coming few seasons (during Peter's time).

More two-part stories. Some of the stories in the new series could have benefited from extra time. This would allow 90 minutes per story, plenty of time to develop characters, lay out background, and tie up loose ends. I also feel like some of the longer stories are more "epic" with more interesting movie-style plot lines.

Keep the credits until Jenna leaves. The current title sequence isn't Matt's and it isn't Peter's, it's Jenna's. The new credits started when she came aboard, and they should leave with her. They can alter them to show Peter's name and face in the beginning. When she leaves, they can start a new credit sequence. I actually like the idea of theme music corresponding to companion, rather than Doctor, and they could probably keep it up indefinitely.

Have the search for Gallifrey be more low-key. This story arc could be drawn out over a long time. However, it shouldn't be as heavy of a plot line as series 6. It should be more similar to Davies' story arcs, where references are only thrown in every couple episodes. There could be a dramatic season finale where the Doctor picks up a Time Lord beacon and thinking it's from Gallifrey, goes to investigate. Instead it could turn out to be a lone scout TARDIS attempting to find a way back home. The Doctor could meet up with the crew and receive news of home while battling Daleks. There could also be an episode where the Doctor attempts to bust through to the parallel universe where Gallifrey is, but instead lands on the set of the show in Cardiff.

Revisit old companions. It'd be lovely to see how Martha and Mickey are faring, or for the Doctor to finally meet Gwen face-to-face. We could even meet a classic companion, such as Tegan or Ace. They don't even have to travel in the TARDIS, just meet the Doctor again for one more adventure.

Bring back Confidential. Seriously. Just do it.

Do something for the 10th anniversary of New Who. I don't care what it is, just something. It can be a brand new story featuring Chris, David, Matt, and Peter. It could also be a documentary about what it took to bring the show back to the air with brand new interviews. A retrospective look at the past ten years featuring never before seen behind the scenes footage would work, too. An Adventure in Space and Time, Part 2 starring Russell T. Davies, Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, and David Tennant as themselves with other supporting actors and actresses would be brilliant.

Bring back K-9. There's no time like the present to bring back the Doctor's trusty robot dog. Kids love it, the Doctor loves it, I love it (and I'm a cat person). I think Clara would be amused by the fact that the Doctor once traveled with no more company than a metal dog. They should definitely do it while John Leeson is still alive.

Create a spin-off. I don't care whether they bring back Torchwood or create something brand new. There's been talk of a Paternoster spin-off, however, I would prefer to see the adventures of the Doctor's daughter, Jenny. I know it's been five years, but her story is just one giant loose end that needs addressing. The very least they could do is a novel or Big Finish series. Someone also suggested a semi-canon series where each week River, Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, & Clara (or some combination thereof) steal the TARDIS and go on their own adventures.

More UNIT stories. I love a good old-fashioned "invasion Earth" story. There haven't been many of these stories since Davies left, in fact, there's only been two with UNIT in them. Just one story of this type per season would be sufficient. I think some fans would like to see more of Osgood and the secret underground base.

Break the fourth wall. A few possibilities exist here. First, the TARDIS could crash and get replaced with the TARDIS set at the studio and the Doctor and Clara swap places with Peter and Jenna. Then they'd have to find their way back. Another possibility is that the Doctor already knows he's a fictional character. Perhaps something happens (such as a plot hole the characters notice) and the Doctor comments on the poor quality of the script.

Have the next companion not be from present-day Earth. Davies and Moffat have been using the same format of present-day Earth girl over and over again since 2005. The classic series had all sorts of different companions. Someone from another planet or another time period would bring a nice refreshing change. Some ideas include a slave girl from ancient Rome, the daughter of some noble in 15th century France, or the sole survivor of some expedition in the 47th century. A Time Lady would work, too.

Develop the Paternoster Gang's backstory. We've already had The Crimson Horror, which was pretty centered on our Victorian trio. However, an explanation as to how Vastra and Jenny met and fell in love would be nice. It would also be nice to see how they came to be fighting crime.

Write pure historical episodes. They haven't done one of these since the sixties. Instead of all the usual sci-fi and aliens, an episode where the Doctor and companion travel back in time and get caught up in historical events. No monster, no aliens, no tech, just the Doctor and friend getting themselves in a pickle and having to get out. It's a nice break from the usual technobabble and complicated timey-wimey stories, just a nice, simple historical. Plus, it would go back to Doctor Who's roots as being educational, although I think we're long past that now.

More episodes set on other parts of Earth. The curse of the new series is London, London, London. Everything happens in London. An episode set in another part of Earth would be nice. There are loads of good places: the Mediterranean, Australia, the Amazon, China, the African Serengeti, North America, etc. It's quite literally a big planet.

Halloween special. With a full thirteen episodes airing in the fall, Doctor Who has an opportunity it's never had before. There's no time like Halloween for Moffat to crank up the fright levels. I know it isn't going to happen, but a crossover with Supernatural would make for some very spooky fun!

Tom Baker-esque pockets scene. I really want another scene where the Doctor is forced to empty his pockets and produces an endless array of random items. He's either captured and made to turn out his pockets or is looking for something and can't remember which pocket it's in. Either way, he produces a bizarre assortment of items that only a Time Lord would have on them.

Clara-centric story. In the theme of having Doctor-lite stories, I suggest something similar to Supernatural's Weekend at Bobby's. Since Clara doesn't travel with the Doctor all the time, it'd be interesting to what she gets up to in between adventures. I suggest something following up on her teaching job seen in The Day of the Doctor, while also showing what happened to the Maitland kids. Perhaps the Doctor phones in several times to update Clara on the status of some adventure he's having. He shows up later, needing her help, and Clara offers to help him in exchange for housework. The Doctor does some chores, then they pop off to another planet to finish his adventure.

Cross-over. I'd be happy with anything really, Star Trek, Supernatural, Sherlock, Warehouse 13, you name it. With the TARDIS' ability to travel to parallel universes restored, the list of possibilities is endless.

The aftermath of the Earth-Zygon treaty. How it plays out all depends on whether it's public knowledge. If it's an international treaty, and not just Britain (since UNIT is a global organization), every politician on Earth would have to be informed. The UN would probably ratify it, and it would have to become public knowledge. Then there's just the question of how much becomes public knowledge. The details of how the treaty was signed could probably be hidden. That way, the public doesn't know about the Doctor or the Dark Vault. Of course, there would always be rumors and speculation as to what really happened.

Pompeii story. I know Moffat has already promised to explain what the 12th Doctor was doing in Pompeii, but I want to see a full-fledged story made out of it. There needs to be a proper plot line (one that isn't totally dependent on David's story) that stars Peter, Jenna, John Barrowman, David, and Catherine Tate. The reason I want Jack there is because he mentioned visiting Pompeii way back in series 1. Also, we always need more Captain on this show.

Web of Fear Limited Collector's Edition DVD Info

BBC Shop has released details for the special collector's edition of The Web of Fear. The story is one of two whose recovery was announced last year, along with Enemy of the World.
Now updated with a BBC Shop exclusive slipcase cover to match the style of Doctor Who: Enemy of the World Exclusive DVD.

The second serial in the infamous "missing episodes", recovered from far flung TV out-posts and lovingly remastered and pressed to disc for you to collect and keep, Web of Fear sees the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) meet Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, who goes on to be known as the Brigadier, for the first time.

Featuring robot Yeti, London Underground, The Great Intelligence and of course companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling), this recovered story arc was deemed so scary that it was preceded by the following message, delivered by the Doctor sitting in one of the London Underground sets and saying:

‘Thank goodness… Oh, it's you... I thought for one moment it was... I'll just sit down for a minute.
I'm glad I met you as a matter of fact; there's something I want to tell you.
'When we start out on our next adventure – Jamie, Victoria and I – we meet some old friends.
Yes, and we also meet some old enemies. Very old enemies.
The Yeti as a matter of fact. Only this time they're just a little bit more frightening than last time.
So I'll warn you that if your Mummy or Daddy are scared, you just get them to hold your hand.

Doctor Who Wins in National Television Awards

Doctor Who won two categories in the National Television Awards tonight. The show won "best drama" while Matt Smith won "best drama performance." You can watch Matt's video thank you below.

First Born Review

Day 1 of Winchester separation saw both brothers making bad decisions. Dean decided to take the mark of Cain, which could have unforeseen consequences down the road. Sam was so pushed by guilt that he pushed Cas to continue extracting grace from him when it nearly killed him. We know from the trailer that next week they'll be back together. I really think they need more time apart to learn to make decision that account for their own well being without being pushed into it by the other.

I'm predicting this mark is going to have some sort of effect on Dean. My guess is that it's going to make him more of a cold-hearted killer than before. The brothers have always been violent, but this will probably magnify that effect. In fact, it may even make him more violent towards people he wouldn't otherwise be violent towards, like Sam and Cas.

This story certainly has some implications for the mythology of the show. Sam and Dean are supposed to be direct descendants of Cain and Able. Cain said that Able was being tempted by Lucifer and that he made a deal with Lucifer to kill Able and send him to heaven. Cain would then serve Lucifer in Able's place. This has a certain parallel to how Sam was tempted to become Lucifer's vessel. The only question is whether the story will conclude in the same way, with Dean killing Sam in order to save him.

We learned in this episode that a bit of grace is left behind whenever an angel leaves its vessel. It'd be interesting to see if that grace had any potential side effects. Perhaps it makes it easier for the vessel to be found again. It might also establish some sort of bond between angel and vessel. Castiel said there wasn't enough grace left for them to use a spell to summon Gadriel. I wonder it there's just the teeniest bit of Lucifer's grace left in Sam. It wouldn't be very much, just enough to skew the effects of the spell.

Hunger Games Announcement on Friday

Well, at least I think it's an announcement. The tweet in question was very cryptic. It's suffice to say that something will be happening in the world of Hunger Games this Friday. I guess we'll have to wait to find out what.

Titan to Produce New Doctor Who Comics

Last year, it was announced that IDW would no longer be producing Doctor Who comic books. The issue in their range came out in December of last year. BBC Worldwide has now announced that they'll be teaming up with Titan Comics to produce additional Doctor Who comic adventures.
In the universe of Doctor Who regenerations bring not only a new Doctor but often a fresh look and feel to the series and BBC Worldwide is bringing that same approach to Doctor Who comics as it signs a new deal with Titan Comics. The deal will open up the world of Doctor Who and provide fans with new stand alone adventures featuring the Tenth Doctor, Eleventh Doctor and after the new series launch, the Twelfth Doctor. Creative and production teams will be announced in the coming weeks and the first comic books will be released in 2014.

Sherlock: the Network Launches

BBC Worldwide has released a new iOS app called Sherlock: the Network. The app asks the user to joins Sherlock's homeless network and help solve cases. The app also features video messages from the cast of the show.
Sherlock Holmes has an urgent message for you. He needs you to help him solve his latest cases. Using your mobile phone, you must navigate the streets of London discovering clues, solving puzzles and piecing together the answers.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, Martin Freeman as John and Mark Gatiss as Mycroft, Sherlock: The Network is the official Sherlock app, containing ten new cases to solve with exclusive video, games, puzzles and a leaderboard for top players.

Sherlock: The Network is designed to extend the original programme beyond the television set directly into the hands of fans by inviting players to become one of the detective’s trusted Homeless Network across London. Players unscramble audio recordings, break into computers, decrypt codes and assemble images to gain clues. From missing persons and bomb threats to poison and murder – all the threads lead back to Sherlock.

Using a bespoke mapping and messaging interface, participants navigate virtual London by tube, taxi or on foot. They head to different locations across the capital to hear from witnesses, collect and store evidence, unlock clues, earn money and pick up valuable tools to help accelerate their mission – all with the aim of cracking each of the cases as quickly as possible to solve the final mystery.

Road Trip Review

So we learned some interesting tidbits about possession in this episode. Apparently, both an angel and a demon can possess the same person simultaneously. I'm still not sure I like this new CGI thing where angels are visible as they possess someone. They look sorta like white smoke, which is a bit too much like a demon for me. Also, what happened to being the size of the Chrysler building with four faces? Humans aren't supposed to be able to perceive their true form, and here we are perceiving them.

I love hearing about Sam and Dean's secret codes and tricks. This week, we learned that "poughkeepsie" means "drop everything and run". There have other codes, as well. Saying they've got something stuck to their shoe means they're being followed. Also, in the event of separation, they go to the first motel in the phone book and ask for Jim Rockford.

Demons have infiltrated the NSA. Kinda makes you wonder what else they've infiltrated. Probably everything. CIA, FBI, UN, KBG, SS, MI5, Congress, big business, they probably make it a point to infiltrate everything they can. They probably have just enough spies to monitor everything going on, while having a low enough number to avoid arousing suspicion.

We see more of the Winchester codependency problem here. Sam claims he was ready to die, but Dean just wouldn't live without him. The brothers have a dangerous history of doing whatever it takes to keep each other alive. Previously, it meant making demons deals, but now it's gotten into allowing unknown angels to possess each other. I'm not sure there will ever be a day when they simply allow one another to die. It's not healthy.

I still want to know if Michael and Lucifer were freed from the cage. We know that at least two angels were freed from heavenly jail, but does that include the cage? There's been some speculation as to whether we'll see the 2014 endverse this season. I'd love to see the return of the archangels, just as long as the writers added something new into the mix. I want either a new bit of mythology about them or a new plan for them to achieve, since their previous apocalyptic plans were ruined.

Details on Dark Eyes 2

Big Finish has released information on the second part of their 8th Doctor story, Dark Eyes.
When the Doctor defeated the Dalek Time Controller and its Time Lord ally, the timelines shifted and events changed... but the danger is far from over. And new threats to the continued safety of the universe are emerging.

Molly O'Sullivan carried on with her life as a nursing assistant in World War One. She probably thought she would never see the Doctor in his 'Tardy-box' again...

From the Dalek occupied planet Nixyce VII through Earth's history and to the very edge of the universe, the Doctor's footprints across eternity are being tracked by foes old and new. But when did it all begin and when will it end? Living his life through the complexities of time travel, the Doctor can never be quite sure if he's experiencing his life in the most helpful order. The only certainty appears to be the advance of the powers of evil and the oncoming threat of a fight to the death against forces that would destroy everything the Doctor holds dear.
The audio adventure will be released next month at a price of US$20. It has a four parts, totaling roughly five hours.

His Last Vow Review

I really didn't see the bit about the vaults coming. I suspected from the beginning of the episode that Magnussen was using a memory technique similar to Sherlock. However, I was under the impression that he had most of his information kept in the vault. It really threw me off when they showed him sitting in the vaults watching the video of John being dragged out of the fire. I thought he was watching a YouTube video on a computer monitor. It turns out he was simply remembering information from before.

Since The Empty Hearse, it was really obvious that something was off with Mary. The first clue was that she recognized skip code. The second was that Sherlock deduced far more about her than he does with average person. That seemed to suggest she was a very complicated person with intelligence training. Perhaps that she had multiple identities running simultaneously. Her short haircut seemed to suggest some sort of military lifestyle. I was actually under the impression she was hired by somebody to get close to John and Sherlock and spy on them. It turns out she was simply running from her past.

It was interesting to see inside Sherlock's mind palace again. It turns out there's more people in there than just him and Mycroft. Different people voice different types of information. Molly voices medical knowledge, while Anderson voices forensics. Mycroft is still the voice of reason and logic. I'm still not seeing a physical layout to the palace. The mind palace technique involves associating information with physical objects stored in an imaginary location. Once you find the object, you can find the information associated with it. I supposed the location doesn't have to be a real one, so it's possible Sherlock has hodgepodged together several different rooms and structures into one.

I didn't see the ending coming at all. I knew Sherlock would do something to fulfill his vow to protect John and Mary, but I thought that he would simply fail at it. In the books, Mary dies, so I was under the impression that she would get killed off in this episode (Moffat did say somebody would die). I certainly wasn't expecting Sherlock to shoot and kill Magnussen. Moriarty's return certainly did surprise me, although I'm not certain it's genuine. There's the possibility someone is going to masquerade as Moriarty in series 4 before being finally revealed as someone else. Then again, Sherlock and Moriarty may have simply fake suicided at each other.

I'm anxious to see how Moriarty hacked into every screen in the UK. My personal theory (as an engineering student) is that he lied when he told Sherlock the key code didn't exist. He actually did have a program that could hack any computer in existence, but he simply convinced Sherlock that it was a lie. It's either that, or he has a Doctor Who-style omcom and next season will see WhoLock.

Worlds in Time Shutting Down

The BBC has announced that the free-to-play online Doctor Who game, Worlds in Time, will be shutting down. The game, which has been available since 2012 will close at noon PST on March 3rd.

As of today, players will no longer be allowed to make transactions, but will be able to use their existing in-game money. Customer support will be available through the closure date. Players can use the access code DWAPP to get 10% off purchases in the BBC shop.

Tales of Trenzalore

BBC Books has announced a new ebook featuring the 11th Doctor. It details some of his adventures during the course of The Time of the Doctor.

The Purge Synopsis

Episode description for episode 13 of the Supernatural season 9.
Sam and Dean investigate recent murders where the victims were hundreds of pounds lighter after their deaths. Suspecting witches, the two go undercover at a fancy day spa that all of the victims had attended for weight loss. While Sam is hired as a fitness instructor, Dean takes kitchen duty. After Dean swipes some tainted food and passes out, the guys realize someone is drugging the guests and literally sucking all of the fat out of them until they die.
