Maisie is Playing a New Character

According to Steven Moffat at the Television Critics' Association press tour, Maisie Williams is not playing a returning character. He said,
Once you see what she’s up to you’ll appreciate what a clever idea [the role] was. It’s a significant role, we’re not just throwing her away. It’s a great part and she’s terrific in it. One thing I think is worth saying, because it keeps coming up as an issue, is that she is not playing a returning character. She’s a new character, she’s not a character from the Doctor’s past.

Ant-Man Review

There's several references to existing Marvel properties in this film, and I'm not just talking about the Falcon vs. Ant-Man fight scene. The movie opens with the Triskelion under construction and Hank Pym tendering his resignation from SHIELD to Director Carter, Howard Stark, and Mitchell Carson. Later, the Ant team uses a version of Howard Stark's implosion warheads to destroy Pym Technologies. Also, when Scott suggests calling the Avengers, Hank says they might just drop a city on Darren Cross.

I noticed the camera followed Hank's key-chain just a bit too much for a trivial object. I figured there had to be something related to Pym particles in there, like a grenade or a spare suit. I didn't suspect it was just a shrunken down tank. Given how long Hank had probably stored it there, I'm surprised the fuel and battery didn't break down.

Now that we have the Wasp, or will have her in a future movie, we're shaping up to have a fair number of female Avengers come phase 4. By the end of phase 3, we'll have Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Sif, Gamora, and Maria Hill. Add to that Pepper Potts as Rescue, Jane Foster as the new goddess of thunder, Kate Bishop as Hawkeye, and Jessica Drew as Spider-Woman and we'll have more than enough characters for an A-Force movie sometime around 2021. It'd be even better if Marvel migrated Skye, May, and Bobbi over from the TV side.

Another thing I noticed was that the color of the Pym particles matched the color of the suits. The Pym particles used by Hank and his Ant-Man suit were red, while Darren's matched the yellow of the Yellowjacket suit. I doubt the writers came up with any sort of the technical explanation for why this is. It's probably just something done in post to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys.

Mitchell Carson (the Hydra agent Hank punched in the '80s) took off with a sample of Pym particles. Since Agents of SHIELD seems to deal pretty heavily with Hydra, I'm guessing we'll pick up on the consequences of that in that show. Assuming FitzSimmons has the original SHIELD files on Pym particles they might be able to devise some sort of chemical agent to neutralize them. Alternatively, Coulson might to send in a team to blow up whatever samples they have. It's also possible this might tie into an Ant-Man sequel in phase 4, though that's awfully far off.

My dad noticed some flaws in the science behind Pym particles. The movie said they work by decreasing the distance between molecules. That means Scott should still weigh the same when he's shrunken down. That raises the question of how he was able to ride on an ant. Ants can lift many times their own weight, but the difference between an ant and a full grown human is huge. Also, it means Scott should only be able to shrink down so far as he's limited by the size of his molecules. He should not be able to go down to a subatomic size.

Emily Swallow Cast in Supernatural

According to a report from TVLine, Emily Swallow (The Mentalist, Southland) has been cast in the new season of Supernatural as the femme fatale, Amara. As I previously mentioned, this character is probably the Greek primordial goddess of the light. I'm guessing she's going to somehow stop the darkness, then go after the brothers in revenge for releasing it.

Ianto Jones Returns in Fall to Earth

Big Finish has announced that the second in their coming range of new Torchwood stories, Fall to Earth, will star Gareth David-Lloyd at Ianto Jones. The audio will be released this October, a month after the first one. It is currently available for pre-order, priced US$15.55 for CD and $7.99 for digital download.
Big Finish are delighted to announce that fan-favourite actor Gareth David-Lloyd will star as Ianto Jones for the second release in our new series of Torchwood Audio Dramas.

Gareth appeared throughout the first three series of the popular BBC show created by Russell T Davies. A mild-mannered administrator for the Torchwood team, Ianto helped defend Cardiff from the horrors of the rift, and aided the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) in a battle against the Daleks in two episodes of Doctor Who.

Ianto made his final TV appearance in the 2009 mini-series Children of Earth, but his popularity and legacy has stood the test of time, with a special commemorative memorial for the character erected in Cardiff Bay.

“Well, how could we not?” says producer James Goss. “Ianto's such a brilliant character, and if we kept people on tenterhooks any longer, we'd be fools. Of course he's in it and as soon as possible. We recorded with him literally the first day after he finished a theatre tour. Did he want to put his feet up? Nope. He wanted to be Ianto.”

Gareth will return in Torchwood: Fall to Earth, where the team's ongoing investigation into a worldwide conspiracy places Ianto on the first privately-funded spaceflight; just as it's plunging out of the sky! The new release follows on from John Barrowman's return as Captain Jack Harkness in the opening instalment, Torchwood: The Conspiracy.

“Seeing Gareth in studio was an absolute delight,” glowed director Scott Handcock. “He clearly loves the part and had a great time. And can't wait to be back.”

The new story will be released in October, allowing for an unbroken run of stories from September. Four more releases will follow at monthly intervals into 2016.

“There was originally going to be a gap after the first release,” explains James, “but we soon realised that everyone we spoke to was being so helpful, we'd be in studio a lot earlier. Actors, writers, agents, BBC Worldwide have all been amazing - 'Well, since it's Torchwood' everyone kept saying. So it's coming out early. Since it's Torchwood.”

Torchwood: Fall to Earth will be released in October, and can be pre-ordered today. It will be followed by four further stories at monthly intervals, through to February 2016. You can subscribe to all six titles today, starting with September's Torchwood: The Conspiracy.
