The Doctor won’t have a temporary companion this Christmas and essentially that space will be taken by Nardole. He’s not a companion as such but it’s not as if he doesn’t play a similar role.

Justin Chatwin Cast in Doctor Who
The Radio Times has posted that Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds, Orphan Black) will be playing a "superhero character" in the upcoming Christmas special. I guess even Doctor Who has to capitalize on the popularity of superheros. They've also confirmed what fans have known since filming began, that Nardole will be in the special, as well.
