James Gunn Back as Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 Director

According to Deadline, Disney has rehired James Gunn as director of the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Gunn was fired last summer after right-wing sites exposed decade-old tweets of his joking about pedophilia and rape, allegedly in retribution for his criticism of Trump. Gunn has apologized for the remarks and not attempted to justify them beyond saying he was younger and "trying to get a reaction." He is apparently still on track to direct The Suicide Squad, which will come out before Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 3 (which puts Guardians 3 no earlier than 2022).

Guardians 3 in the Works

In a recent interview with Complex, director James Gunn confirmed that Marvel is interested in making a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
There will be a ‘Guardians 3,’ that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.
He makes it sound like he might not be directing the threequel, though that's completely normal for the MCU (the Iron Man, Captain America, & Thor trilogies all had multiple directors. We don't have an official release date for this film, but it could be as soon as 2020.
