Nicole Perlman on Captain Marvel

One of the Captain Marvel script writers, Nicole Perlman, was on The Great Big Beautiful Podcast last night, where she talked about the release date getting pushed back, differences with her Guardians of the Galaxy script, and the age controversy.
I think that making sure that Captain Marvel is not somebody who is a hero in SPITE of her femininity is important. She’s a very strong character and her being a woman is part of that strength. I will say that there are certain tropes you can get away without having to examine too much if you’re not writing the first female Marvel Studios lead; that could be read into a lot or that could diminish hero own proactivity, strength, and independence.

I had to consult with the Air Force yesterday and I brought up the age issue and they said that it was not out of the realm of possibility, that somebody could be very accomplished in the Air Force between the age of 28-34 and that you could go very far within that time. I don’t think the age is going to be an issue. Also obviously by the time the film comes out and by the time they finish shooting, Brie will be a lot older than when she was announced.

Carol Danvers' Origin to Change in MCU

In a recent interview, writer Nicole Perlman said that they will be changing Carol Danvers' origin story in the Captain Marvel movie to remove similarities to Green Lantern and make her more her own character. In the comics, Carol got her powers when Kree alien warrior Mar-Vell (the original Captain Marvel created by Marvel) shielded her from an exploding Kree device, fusing his DNA onto hers.
But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character.
