Diary of River Song Details

Big Finish has released more information on the upcoming River Song box set, Diary of River Song. The set is currently on pre-order for US$31.26 for CD and $20 for digital download.
Launching in January 2016, Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song continues the adventures of the Doctor's wife and Time Lady adventuress; once again portrayed by Alex Kingston. Already announced is Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor; but today we're pleased to reveal other key names.

Opening the adventures will be Alexander Vlahos (Merlin, The Confessions of Dorian Gray) as Bertie, who will join River at an archeological dig in opening story The Boundless Sea, written by popular novelist Jenny T Colgan.

'Jenny has been on my writing wish-list for a while,' says script editor Matt Fitton, 'and she's created a funny, thrilling and scary adventure to kick start River's journey'.

From there, River heads to the most exclusive gathering in the middle of Hyperspace in Justin Richards' I Went to a Marvellous Party. There she meets Gifford (Alexander Siddig – Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Game of Thrones) and Isabella (Imogen Stubbs – Twelfth Night, Sense and Sensibility), a pair of socialites with connections to the mysterious Rulers of the Universe.

Next James Goss puts River on the trail of mysterious, planet-killing Spore Ships in Signs, where we are also introduced to a handsome time-travelling stranger  – her future husband Mr Song, played by Samuel West (Howard's End, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell, Doctor Who – Dimensions in Time).

The series concludes with the Eighth Doctor's arrival in The Rulers of the Universe by Matt Fitton. River must contend with a secret society, and a face off with an ancient alien force; with her future husband caught in the middle!

Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song is due for release in January 2016. Pre-order your copy today!

River Song will return in March 2016 in Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2.

UNIT: The New Series Cast Revealed

Big Finish has announced the rest of the cast members in their upcoming range about the Unified Intelligence Taskforce. In addition to the already announced Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver will be reprising her role from the television series as Osgood. Joining them will be Warren Brown (Captain Webb, X Company) as UNIT troubleshooter Lieutenant Sam Bishop, Ramon Tikaram (Game of Thrones, Jupiter Ascending) as Colonel Shindi, and James Joyce (Downtown Abbey, The Musketeers) as loose cannon Captain Josh Carter. Producer David Richardson commented,
We're so happy to have Kate and Osgood joining us at Big Finish. This team has been so captivating to watch on TV, and we're looking forward to throwing some deadly challenges in their paths in these kinetic new episodes.

We've worked with Warren several times before, and even though he's one of the busiest leading men around, he's said he'll be there for Big Finish. So we've created a principle role in UNIT especially for him, and he'll be an essential member of the global team.

Ramon also is busy on so many great things, but we've tempted him to the ranks of UNIT! He's a lovely man to have around, and an extraordinary actor.

James has done so much brilliant audio work for us, he's earned his place in UNIT!

The Light at the End Review

This story is a bit more timey-wimey than most classic series stories. There's a lot more jumping around in time and causal loops and paradoxes. I really don't have much comparison for other Big Finish stories, so I don't know if it's normal for them, but it's rather akin to something more Moffat-ish.

I was glad they found a way to incorporate the first three Doctors (who are, sadly, dead). I don't know whether it was through computers or clever voice acting, but they did have dialogue and were in the plot line. It would have been awesome if they included the new series Doctors as well, but they don't have the license rights for them. There has been talk of changing Big Finish's licensing to include the new series. Maybe they can do something for the 60th anniversary, or perhaps the 10th anniversary of the new series.

I'm not sure of the reasoning for having the Master in this story be the 13th regeneration one from The Deadly Assassin and The Keeper of Traken. I would have expected Ainley!Master or perhaps some other version from the 8th Doctor stories (if there is one). There doesn't seem to be much clear reason for the writers to establish that it's that particular Master if it's the wrong one. Perhaps for a multi-Doctor story such as this one, there is no "correct" Master and it doesn't matter which one they use.

This story does contain a certain ring of The Name of the Doctor in that all of the Doctor's victories are reversed. The difference is, instead of going and changing each victory individually, the Master went back and changed a singular moment. Why he chose to do that in this particular way is rather intriguing. The Master could simply have gone back in time to Gallifrey and stopped the Doctor from going to the museum where the TARDIS was. He could have suggested that the Doctor go somewhere else instead or get the Doctor interested in some other part of the museum. There's also the possibility that the Doctor could simply have found another TARDIS somewhere else and stolen that one. So there are a few plot holes in the Master's plan.

The inclusion of the other Time Lords was rather unnecessary. The 6th and 7th Doctors could simply have proceeded to do everything together and the plot would still have turned out the same. Had they eliminated the plot with the Celestial Intervention Agency, the Master would still have had the same plan and the Doctors would still have countered it in the same way.

Legends of Ashildr Details

The BBC has released information on a new Doctor Who book, Legends of Ashildr. It chronicles some of the adventures of Maisie Williams' character from this past season. The hardcover version goes on sale next Tuesday priced $12.99 (the Kindle version goes on sale Thursday priced $12.34).
Ashildr, a young Viking girl, died helping the Doctor and Clara to save the village she loved. And for her heroism, the Doctor used alien technology to bring her back to life. Ashildr is now immortal – The Woman Who Lived. Since that day, Ashildr has kept journals to chronicle her extraordinary life. The Legends of Ashildr is a glimpse of some of those stories: the terrors she has faced, the battles she has won, and the treasures she has found. These are tales of a woman who lived longer than she should ever have lived – and lost more than she can even remember. An original novel featuring the Twelfth Doctor as played by Peter Capaldi, and Ashildr as played by Maisie Williams.

The Torchwood Archive

Big Finish has released information on a new Torchwood audio adventure coming this October.
Torchwood - The Torchwood Archive is a two-disc special release coming in October from Big Finish, celebrating ten years of the massively popular Doctor Who spin-off by bringing together a host of familiar faces in a brand new adventure from writer and producer James Goss.

"Welcome, visitor. The Torchwood Archive provides a complete history of our Institute from its distant beginnings to the present day. When we founded our great enterprise in the year of our Lord 1879, we decreed that there should be a record of this achievement, stored at the very furthest limits of the British Empire. By visiting you are spreading that legacy, perhaps out through the skies. For now, I shall bid you a good day and welcome you to the Torchwood Archive. Do, please look around."

The Torchwood Archive is a forgotten asteroid in the centre of a great war. Jeremiah is its first visitor in many centuries. He's come to learn something very important. And the ghosts of Torchwood are waiting for him.

As James explains: "The Torchwood Archive is a celebration of 10 years of Torchwood. It features scenes with characters from the beginning of Torchwood to what may be its very end - from Queen Victoria through to Jeremiah Bash Henderson. It's an excuse to gather together literally everyone we could get our hands on. It's an unusual release - part anthology, part giddy epic, and mostly just a shameless excuse to hopefully make the fans ridiculously happy."

The story's director, Scott Handcock, adds: "It’s a year since our first Torchwood release and we’ve been discussing the tenth anniversary since the very beginning! The Torchwood Archive is a celebration of all things Torchwood. We’ve spent over a year pulling it together. It’s intricate, epic, insane and tells the story of Torchwood in a way we’ve never experienced before. Fans are in for a treat!”

The Torchwood Archive comes out in October exclusive to Big Finish, and is available for pre-order at £11.99 on Download and £13.99 on CD (instantly unlocking a download version on release), with the pre-release prices ending at the end of the year with the story's general release.

Details on Dark Eyes 2

Big Finish has released information on the second part of their 8th Doctor story, Dark Eyes.
When the Doctor defeated the Dalek Time Controller and its Time Lord ally, the timelines shifted and events changed... but the danger is far from over. And new threats to the continued safety of the universe are emerging.

Molly O'Sullivan carried on with her life as a nursing assistant in World War One. She probably thought she would never see the Doctor in his 'Tardy-box' again...

From the Dalek occupied planet Nixyce VII through Earth's history and to the very edge of the universe, the Doctor's footprints across eternity are being tracked by foes old and new. But when did it all begin and when will it end? Living his life through the complexities of time travel, the Doctor can never be quite sure if he's experiencing his life in the most helpful order. The only certainty appears to be the advance of the powers of evil and the oncoming threat of a fight to the death against forces that would destroy everything the Doctor holds dear.
The audio adventure will be released next month at a price of US$20. It has a four parts, totaling roughly five hours.

3 New Doctor Who Novels Announced

The BBC has released titles and synopses for three new Doctor Who books, to be released this fall.

Royal Blood by Una McCormack
The city-state of Varuz is failing. Duke Aurelian is the last of his line, his capital is crumbling, and the armies of his enemy, Duke Conrad, are poised beyond the mountains to invade. Aurelian is preparing to gamble everything on one last battle. So when a holy man, The Doctor, comes to Varuz from beyond the mountains, Aurelian asks for his blessing in the war.

But all is not what it seems in Varuz. The city-guard have lasers for swords, and the halls are lit by electric candlelight. Aurelian's beloved wife, Guena, and his most trusted knight, Bernhardt, seem to be plotting to overthrow their Duke, and Clara finds herself drawn into their intrigue...

Will The Doctor stop Aurelian from going to war? Will Clara's involvement in the plot against the Duke he discovered? Why is Conrad's ambassador so nervous? And who are the ancient and weary knights who arrive in Varuz claiming to he on a quest for the Holy Grail...?
Big Bang Generation by Gary Russell
Christmas 2015, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Imagine everyone's surprise when a time portal opens up in Sydney Cove. Imagine their shock as a massive pyramid now sits beside the Harbour Bridge, inconveniently blocking Port Jackson and glowing with energy. Imagine their fear as Cyrrus 'the mobster' Globb, Professor Horace Jaanson and an alien assassin called Kik arrive to claim the glowing pyramid. Finally imagine everyone's dismay when they are followed by a bunch of con artists out to spring their greatest grift vet.

This gang consists of Legs (the sexy comedian), Dog Boy (providing protection and firepower), Shortie (handling logistics), Da Trowel (in charge of excavation and history) and their leader, Doc (busy making sure the universe isn't destroyed in an explosion that makes the Big Bang look like a damp squib).

And when someone accidentally reawakens the Ancients of Time - which, Doc reckons, wasn't the wisest or best-judged of actions - things get a whole lot more complicated...
Deep Time by Trevor Baxendale
The Phaeron disappeared from the universe over a million years ago. They travelled among the stars using roads made from time and space, but left only relics behind. But what actually happened to the Phaeron? Some believe they were they eradicated by a superior force... Others claim they destroyed themselves.

Or were they in fact the victims of an even more hideous fate?

In the far future, humans discover the location of the last Phaeron road - and The Doctor and Clara join the mission to see where the road leads. Each member of the research team knows exactly what they're looking for —but only The Doctor knows exactly what they'll find.

Because only The Doctor knows the true secret of the Phaeron: a monstrous secret so terrible and powerful that it must be buried in the deepest grave imaginable...
