Olivia Wilde to Direct Untitled Marvel Movie

Deadline is reporting that Olivia Wilde is going to a Marvel movie for Sony about an unspecified female character. The film will be written by Katie Silberman and produced by Amy Pascal.

David Benioff & DB Weiss Exit Star Wars Films

Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and DB Weiss have quit development of their untitled Star Wars films. The pair cited time constraints and their deal with Netflix as the reasons for their departure. The first of three Star Wars films they were set to produce was scheduled for release in 2022. It's not currently clear what will replace it, although Lucasfilm does have other Star Wars movies in development.

Tom Holland Returning for More MCU Movies

Sony and Marvel have announced that Tom Holland's Spider-Man will return for two more films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will appear in an untitled solo film on July 16, 2021 and another unspecified film. Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige will produce the solo film, with Disney putting up 25% of the cost, in exchange for 25% of the profits. Pascal commented,

This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes. This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise and the fans and I’m overjoyed it will continue.

Patrick Stewart to Return as Picard in New Series

CBS has announced that Patrick Stewart will return as Captain Picard in a new Star Trek TV show on CBS All Access. The series will follow "the next chapter in Picard's life", with Stewart saying "he may not be captain anymore... 20 years has passed." Patrick Stewart, Alex Kurtzman, James Duff, Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, Trevor Roth, Heather Kadin, and Rod Roddenberry will serve as producers. No air date, supporting cast, or other details have been announced yet.

Silk Movie in Development

According to the Wrap, Sony is developing a movie based on Marvel comics character, Cindy Moon. In the comics, Cindy was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker, giving her similar powers. The movie will reportedly be part of the same universe as Venom, Silver and Black, and a few other movies (i.e. not the MCU). Amy Pascal is set to produce.

Wonder Woman 1984 Starts Filming

Warner Bros has confirmed the start of filming on the Wonder Woman sequel, now titled Wonder Woman 1984. Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor, despite dying in the first movie.

BURBANK, Calif. — Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing an all-new foe: The Cheetah. Principal photography is underway on Warner Bros. Pictures’ follow up to the Super Hero’s first outing, last summer’s record-breaking “Wonder Woman,” which took in $822 million at the worldwide box office. “Wonder Woman 1984” will also be helmed by acclaimed director Patty Jenkins, and star Gal Gadot in the title role.

As previously announced, the film also stars Kristen Wiig in the role of the Super-Villain The Cheetah, as well as Pedro Pascal. And Chris Pine returns as Steve Trevor.

Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, Stephen Jones and Gal Gadot are producing the film. Rebecca Roven Oakley, Richard Suckle, Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada are the executive producers.

Joining her behind the scenes are several members of Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” team, including director of photography Matthew Jensen, Oscar-nominated production designer Aline Bonetto (“Amélie”), and Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). Oscar-nominated editor Richard Pearson (“United 93”) will cut the film.

Production will take place in Washington, D.C., Alexandria, Virginia, and in the UK, Spain and the Canary Islands.

Set to open in theaters November 1, 2019, “Wonder Woman 1984” is based on the character created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Doom Patrol Series Announced

DC has announced the development of a Doom Patrol series for their upcoming streaming platform, DC Universe. The 2019 series is a spin-off of Titans and will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Jeremy Carver, and Geoff Johns. The synopsis reads,

DOOM PATROL is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol's members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities—but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence—and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of TITANS, DOOM PATROL will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.

Yet More Star Wars Movies In Development

Lucasfilm has announced another new series of Star Wars films, which will be separate from both the numbered Skywalker family films and Rian Johnson's upcoming trilogy. The new set of films will be written and produced by David Benioff and DB Weiss (of Game of Thrones fame). No other details are available at this time, including plot, settings, or characters.

Andrew Kreisberg Fired

Warner Bros has fired Andrew Kreisberg from his role as executive producer on several TV shows following multiple reports of sexual harassment. The studio issued the following statement

After a thorough investigation, Warner Bros. Television Group has terminated Andrew Kreisberg’s employment, effective immediately. Greg Berlanti will assume additional responsibilities on both The Flash, where he will work closely with executive producer/co-showrunner Todd Helbing, and Supergirl, where he will work closely with executive producers/co-showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller. We remain committed to providing a safe working environment for our employees and everyone involved in our productions.

New Star Wars Film Trilogy Announced

Lucasfilm has announced an additional trilogy of Star Wars films, which will not be part of the Skywalker Saga. They will be created by Rian Johnson (who will write and direct the first film of the new trilogy) and Ram Bergman. The new set of films will "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." No cast members, titles, or release dates have been announced.

Patty Jenkins Directing Wonder Woman 2

Variety has confirmed that Patty Jenkins (director of this year's WW movie) has signed on to the Wonder Woman sequel. She will write (along with Geoff Johns), direct, and produce the 2019 film.

Shazam! To Be Next DCEU Movie to Film

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed rumors that Shazam! will be filming early next year for a 2019 release date. David Sandberg is now attached to direct the film, with Peter Safran in negotiations to produce. It's currently unclear whether Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam will appear in the film.

Supergirl Showrunner Change

Accordng to Deadline, Ali Adler will no longer be a full time producer on Supergirl next season. She's starting a new deal with CBS and will only be involved as an executive consultant. Part-time producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner will be stepping up to replace her.

Teen Titans Series Coming

Warner Bros has announced a new Teen Titans live-action series. The show will debut on a new streaming platform dedicated to DC stuff alongside the third season of Young Justice in 2018. It will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, and Sarah Schechter. The plot is described as follows

It follows a group of young soon-to-be superheroes recruited from every corner of the DC Universe. In the action-adventure series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes that includes Starfire, Raven and others.

Batgirl Movie in Works from Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon is going to write, direct, and produce a Batgirl movie about Barbara Gordon. This version of Barbara will reportedly be based on the New 52 version from the comics. The movie does not have a release date or lead actress at this point. It's also unknown whether Barbara will show up in The Batman, Justice League 2, Nightwing, or Gotham City Sirens (though I would deem an appearance in at least one of these films likely).

Silver Sable/Black Cat Movie in Development

Sony is developing a second Spider-Man spin-off focusing on the adventures of Silver Sable and Black Cat. Chris Yost is updating an earlier version of the script written by Lisa Joy. The film is being produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal, who are hoping to start filming this fall. Silver Sable (aka Silver Sablinova) is a mercenary who hunts war criminals and frenemy of Spider-Man. Black Cat (aka Felicia Hardy) is a thief with luck-based superpowers.

Venom Movie Happening

Sony has announced that they will be releasing a Venom movie on October 5, 2018. The film will be directed by Alex Kurtzman and does not appear to tie into the MCU.

UPDATE: Kurtzman is not directing. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner are attached to write. Original Spider-Man trilogy producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce.

Matt Reeves to Direct The Batman

Warner Bros has officially signed on Matt Reeves to direct and produce the upcoming Batman solo film. Reeves commented,

I have loved the Batman story since I was a child. He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.

Green Lantern Corps Gets Writers

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros has hired David Goyer and Justin Rhodes to write the Green Lantern Corps script. Goyer will also produce the film with DC head honchos Geoff Johns and Jon Berg executive producing. The film will feature not one, but two of Earth's Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The movie has an unofficial release date of July 24, 2020.

Gotham City Sirens News

Warner Bros has hired Suicide Squad director David Ayer to direct and produce the Harley Quinn spin-off movie. The film, now officially dubbed Gotham City Sirens, will feature Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and executive producer. Geneva Robertson-Dworet will write the screenplay, though I'm not sure what happened to the news that Christina Hodson would be doing that. Catwoman and Poison Ivy are expected to appear. THR is also reporting a Deadshot film might happen, though it doesn't seem to be definite. No official release date has been set.
